Coach Tour, Rental Car, or Private Tour?

Here’s the Honest Answer.

Most people planning a trip to Ireland have the same question: what’s the best way to actually see the country?

There are a few options. They’re not all equal. Here’s what each one actually gives you.

The Four Ways to Tour Ireland

🚌

Coach Tours

  • Fixed itinerary, fixed pace, fixed group of strangers
  • Efficient at covering ground, but rarely covers the right ground
  • Coach parks, queues, and forty people with the same schedule
  • You see Ireland from a window and a car park
Good for: getting an overview.
Not ideal for: actually feeling Ireland.
🚗

Self-Drive Holiday

  • Total freedom in theory — but driving on the left takes adjustment
  • Navigation, parking, and logistics eat into the experience
  • You see what’s signposted. You miss what isn’t.
  • No local knowledge. No stories. No one to point to the ruin on the hill.
Good for: independent travellers who know Ireland well.
Harder for: first-timers and those who want to relax.
🚙

Standard Chauffeur Services

  • A driver who gets you from A to B
  • Professional, reliable, and comfortable
  • But often that’s all you get — transport, not experience
Good for: airport transfers.
Not the same as: a guided private tour.

Delaney Tours — Private Guided Tour

  • Private vehicle, private guide, completely personal itinerary
  • Built around you — your interests, your pace, your family history if that matters
  • A driver who is also a guide, local expert, and the person who knows whose kitchen to knock on
  • No coaches, no strangers, no compromise
  • The stops nobody else finds. The stories that aren’t in any guidebook.
The version of Ireland most visitors never get to experience.

What Makes Delaney Tours Different

Vera Delaney — founder of Delaney Tours Ireland, based in Wexford. Plans every trip personally. Has helped visitors from the USA, Canada, Australia, Jamaica, and beyond find the Ireland they were looking for.

Every trip I run is private. It’s just you — or you and your people — with me. I don’t run groups of strangers. I don’t follow a script. I build something around whoever walks through the door.

I was born and raised in Ireland. I live in Wexford. I know the farmer who’ll wave you in off the road, the pub where the music starts when it starts, and the road that looks like nothing on a map but turns out to be the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen.

There is no tourist version of what I do. Just Ireland, at its best.

I’ve done my share of tours, and I can usually tell how the day’s going to go in the first hour. This one kept surprising me — in a good way.

Common Questions

Q: Is a private tour worth the cost compared to a coach tour?
Coach tours and private tours are different products entirely. A private tour is built around you — your interests, your pace, your questions. The experience isn’t comparable. Most clients who travel with Delaney Tours have tried coach tours before and find the difference significant.
Q: Is it safe to drive yourself in Ireland?
Driving on the left is manageable for most people, but Irish country roads can be narrow and the signposting patchy. Many visitors find that not having to drive lets them actually see Ireland rather than concentrate on the road.
Q: Can I plan my own itinerary or do you decide?
Both work. Some people come with a detailed list of places they want to visit. Others give me a feeling — ‘I want wild coast and history’ — and I take it from there. The itinerary is yours.
Q: Do you only do full-day tours?
No — options range from a half-day to two weeks or more. Get in touch and we’ll figure out what works for your time and budget.
Q: How do I start?
Fill in the enquiry form. Tell me when you’re coming and what you’re hoping for. I’ll come back to you personally within 24 hours.
